Therapeutic, or sometimes referred to as pathological or remedial,
horseshoeing involves treating a lameness in your horse through shoeing
with the ultimate goal being the return of a sound horse. When dealing
with lameness in a horse requiring therapeutic shoeing, Coast Farrier
Service believes that optimum results will be achieved when the owner,
veterinarian and farrier work as a team. Diagnosis is done by the
veterinarian, possibly through the use of radiographs (x-rays), and a
prescription is given which may include some combination of therapeutic

drugs or therapy. The farrier, veterinarian and the
owner all play crucial roles in the recovery of an unsound horse.
Recovery may take significant time. Coast Farrier Service is ready to
work closely with you and your veterinarian to help facilitate the
recovery of your horse.
Often, there is more than one way to treat a horse and sometimes a
technique that works well on one horse will not work, or work as well,
on another horse. Sometimes a combination of methods will work. We
believe that when a competent farrier and equine veterinarian assist
each other in an atmosphere of collaboration and respect, a synergistic
affect occurs with the horse being the benefactor. In 2003, Chris
Windisch, owner and farrier at Coast Farrier Service, attended the
Advanced Farrier Course at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell
University located in Ithaca, New York. The Advanced Farrier Course,
which is available to experienced farriers and to active veterinarians,
gave Chris the opportunity to work with and observe some of the latest
advances and techniques in farriery.
Often with regard to therapeutic horseshoeing, time is of the essence.
Coast Farrier Service’s one-of-a-kind mobile farrier shop carries all of
the tools necessary to get the job done correctly and quickly. Over 100
different kinds of shoes, bar shoes and pads as well as two drill
presses and three grinders. Coast Farrier Service also has the ability
to hand forge therapeutic shoes, hospital plates or fabricate any other
type of shoe, shoe modification, or brace, via our MIG and Oxy/Acetylene
welders. We stock a full line of Vettec and other hoof care products for
the creation of extensions, rebuilding or repairing hoof walls, gluing
on shoes and providing support to the sensitive structures of the
horse’s foot. We also have the ability to instantly and accurately
measure the variations in surface temperature of your horse’s hoofs with
our non-contact infrared laser thermometer. Additionally, from our
onboard computer and through the use of downloaded digital photographs
(shot on site by Coast Farrier Service) or radiographs (provided by your
veterinarian), Coast Farrier Service (and your veterinarian, if
necessary) can utilize EponaTech, Metron PX software which allows us to
measure each of your horse’s hoofs, track changes, compare and archive
up to 70 calculated parameters of your horse’s hoof. These unbiased,
full color images and parameters can be compared to your own horse’s
historical database or to a built in database. Metron-PX allows, for
instance, the comparison of changes in angles and other parameters for
the same foot over a period of time. Thus, it enables the tracking of
potential soundness problems. Coast Farrier Service can generate Metron
PX and other computerized conformation tracking reports for you, your
veterinarian or trainer. We also offer video taping of the horse which,
when played in slow motion, can reveal slight gait deviations not
perceptible by the human eye. Additionally, Coast Farrier Service can
receive, via email, radiographs provided by your veterinarian and we
will make available our own records and resources to your veterinarian.
Whatever is necessary, Coast Farrier Service has the experience,
knowledge and equipment to complete the job properly.
The good news is that many of the ailments that may require therapeutic
shoeing are preventable. Horses that are overworked, fed an improper
diet, underfed, overfed, neglected or improperly shod stand a greater
chance of injury or disease. Environmental conditions to include stable
hazards and cleanliness are also a culprit. Coast Farrier Service will
work with you, from our very first appointment, to help prevent the need
for therapeutic shoeing. Contact us today for a complimentary visit to
discuss your individual needs as well as a complete explanation of all
of our services. As always, your satisfaction is guaranteed. |
